A Thanks Giving Story

Dear Hillside Family, The past twelve months have been an unforgettable experience for our family. Last September, Laura and I decided that our son Lucas, a senior at South Christian at the time, needed additional help in coping with life, so we sent him to a boarding school in Idaho. During his time there, he was able to finish high school while at the same time receiving additional benefits we could not provide here at home. He also was getting the extra help he needed through therapy and counseling which ended up being priceless. Although this was an incredibly difficult decision for us, we felt it was necessary.

When we made the decision to send Lucas to Idaho, Laura and I acted in faith, not having any idea of how we would be able to handle the $5400/month tuition to go along with additional therapy costs and the mandatory travel. It is this part of the story where God revealed Himself to us through the help of so many. This includes family, friends and strangers, as well as the South Christian and Hillside communities. We were bathed in prayer by so many, and we received significant financial assistance from many as well. Hillside’s Christian Education and Compassion Fund committees partnered with us throughout, immediately giving us the confidence that we would be able to see this through to the end - when Lucas was ready to come home rather than when we could no longer pay for his care.

After being in Idaho for eleven months, Lucas was able to come home on August 23, equipped with his high school diploma and with some valuable tools.

He grew in many ways and we are so thankful. At the same time we are reminded that this parenting adventure is a marathon and not a sprint.

Our story is another great example of a church congregation taking to heart the promises made at baptism, that we all take part in helping each other as we take on the difficult task of parenting. To those in this congregation who contribute to the Christian Education and Compassion Funds, our family is tremendously grateful for the support given to these funds. Our lives have been forever changed for the better. As you consider where your tithes and gifts can be used, please prayerfully consider these funds.

Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.
